The Express Entry

An online immigration system intended to oversee applications from skilled professionals globally seeking permanent residency in Canada.

The Express Entry Program

Express Entry is an online system designed to handle applications from skilled workers around the globe seeking permanent residency in Canada.

Eligibility Criteria
To submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Express Entry Pool, candidates must meet the eligibility requirements for any of the three Federal Canada immigration programs under the Express Entry system. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements must submit an online profile, an Expression of Interest (EOI) under one of three Federal Canadian immigration programmes, or a participating provincial immigration programme to the Express Entry Pool. The Express Entry System is designed to identify and grant permanent residency status to applicants who have the potential to contribute to the economy and growth of Canada. Under this system, only candidates who possess work experience in the National Occupation Classifications (NOC) TEER categories of TEER 0, TEER 1, TEER 2, and TEER 3 would be eligible to apply.
Express Entry Point System
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which calculates the points for an invitation to apply to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), requires applicants to score at least 67 out of 100 points to be eligible for the Express Entry System. According to the IRCC, if your score is higher than or equal to 67, you may apply to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker. If your score is less than 67, you are ineligible to migrate to Canada as a skilled worker. You can, however, choose to participate in any other provincial nominee program.
Express Entry Draw
The Comprehensive ranking system (CRS) is used to rank each candidate in the pool. Throughout the year, invitation rounds will be held for the pool’s top candidates to submit an application for permanent residence.
Immigration Programmes Under Express Entry
  • Federal Skilled Worker Programme
The Federal Skilled Worker Program under Express Entry enables individuals with international work experience to seek permanent residency in Canada. Applicants are required to possess a minimum of one year of uninterrupted full-time or comparable part-time work experience in a qualifying occupation under NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 within the past decade. A minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 is mandated in all four language test sections, with supplementary points available for educational qualifications, both Canadian and international. Applicants must demonstrate admissibility by fulfilling medical and criminal background criteria. Evidence of adequate financial resources is mandatory unless the applicant possesses a valid employment offer in Canada. The language proficiency of the spouse can enhance the Express Entry score, thereby augmenting the probability of selection.
  • Federal Skilled Trade Programme
The Federal Skilled Trades (FST) Program under Express Entry allows skilled trade professionals to apply for permanent residency in Canada. Candidates must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years, meet job requirements under the National Occupational Classification (NOC), and secure a valid job offer for at least one year or a trade certification from a Canadian authority. While there is no education requirement, including academic qualifications can boost Express Entry scores. Applicants must achieve a minimum CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. They must also demonstrate sufficient financial resources unless they have a valid job offer. Additionally, candidates must prove their admissibility to Canada by meeting medical and criminal background requirements.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) within Express Entry is designed for skilled workers possessing Canadian work experience who aspire to obtain permanent residency. Applicants are required to possess a minimum of one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations within the preceding three years. No educational prerequisites are mandated; however, Canadian or international qualifications may enhance Express Entry scores. Language requirements differ: CLB 7 for TEER 0 and 1, CLB 5 for TEER 2 and 3. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 1,560 hours of employment with Canadian employers and submit their application within three years of acquiring this experience. Self-employment and student employment, including cooperative education, are excluded. Proof of funds is unnecessary for CEC applications but mandatory for FSW or FST applications.

    Why Choose Express Entry?

The Express Entry system offers significant advantages for those looking to immigrate, as frequent draws enhance the likelihood of obtaining an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. Enhancing your CRS score can be achieved by securing a job offer from Canada, obtaining a provincial nomination, gaining more work experience, pursuing higher education in Canada, or improving your language skills. As Canada aims to welcome 500,000 new immigrants by 2025, Express Entry presents an exciting chance to establish a secure future in a nation celebrated for its booming economy and high quality of life.

    Express Entry Process

    Step 1: Check Eligibility

Look at the outlined criteria for Express Entry programs. Make sure you satisfy the necessary requirements related to aspects such as age, education, work experience, and adaptability before moving forward.

Step 2: Language Proficiency & Credential Assessment

Take the required language proficiency test and achieve the minimum score prescribed for your program. Obtain an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an authorized organization to verify your foreign education qualifications.

Step 3: Create and Submit Your Profile

Complete your Express Entry profile with accurate information. Attach all required documents before submitting. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) will rank your profile.

Step 4: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If your CRS score meets the minimum criteria, you could be granted an Invitation to Apply (ITA) by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This stage relies on the minimum scores established in regular Express Entry selections.

Step 5: Submit Application for Permanent Residence (PR)

After obtaining an ITA, ensure that you submit your Application for Permanent Residence (PR) to IRCC prior to the deadline. Please ensure that you pay the application fees and provide all necessary documents, which include:

    Medical Examination Certificate

    Police Clearance Certificate(s)

    Proof of Funds (if applicable)

Once your submission is successful, you will receive an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) from IRCC, indicating that your application is currently being processed.

    Step 6: Biometrics Submission

IRCC will request fingerprints and a photo. Schedule and complete biometrics at the service centre on time.

Step 7: Application Processing & Final Decision

IRCC processes applications after submission. The processing time is usually six months or less, depending on application volume and case complexity. At this stage, IRCC may request more documents or clarifications.

Step 8: Approval & Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)

Upon approval of your application by IRCC, you will be issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and, if applicable, a permanent resident visa. It is essential to finish the landing process within the specified timeframe to officially attain Canadian permanent residency.
